Remodeling With New Types of Tile
Creating a New Look in Tile
When updating a bathroom or kitchen, certain elements are considered the most important to change. For instance, with cabinets being the primary focal point, this would be one of the first changes. In addition, new flooring is usually installed, along with new countertops and fixtures. However, another aspect of the bathroom and kitchen that needs attention is the tile, whether tile in a bathtub or shower, a kitchen backsplash, or all kitchen tile.
Today, the price of new tile is affordable, a luxury not available 10 years ago. You will also find that tile made and sold now is designed differently, which makes do-it-yourself projects much easier to complete. Even so, installing new tile in the bathtub or shower area, as the kitchen backsplash, or tile throughout the kitchen is a time-consuming and often frustrating process. The good news is that outdated tile in your home can be transformed with an easier solution.
Several manufacturers now sell a type of spray on stone product. For instance, Rust Oleum has a product called "Stone Spray" and Krylon sells "Make it Stone". Sold in cans that look like regular spray paint, the paint is textured so after being sprayed onto a tile, plastic, glass, foam, plaster, ceramic, wood, metal, or paper surface, it looks like expensive granite.
This type of spray on stone also comes in a wide range of colors so regardless of the kitchen or bathroom style or décor you can find a color that would be ideal. Although new colors are developed occasionally, currently you could choose from black, gray, taupe, light brown, medium brown, dark brown, beige, cream, gold, green, and blue. The look of natural stone is achieved by tiny flecks of other colors being added. For instance, black has flecks of white and gray, cream features flecks of brown and beige, and beige is formulated with brown, blue, and green.
However, along with spray on products that look like granite, you will also find similar products that create other faux finishes. Some of the other popular spray on textures that would be ideal if you wanted to transform bathroom and/or kitchen tile includes black marble, tan travertine, moss jadestone, white onyx, and rose-colored quartz. If wanted, you could even purchase spray-on stainless steel, giving the appearance of contemporary tile.
After the chosen product is sprayed onto the tile or other surface, it would be fully dry in five to six hours, although spray-on stainless steel takes seven days. Once dry, the tile would look gorgeous, while having a tight seal and easy-to-clean surface. For bathroom or kitchen tile, you would begin by preparing the area and surface. The tiles should be cleaned and then allowed to dry. Areas that you do not want painted would be protected with taped on paper such as the cabinets, sink/faucet, and countertops.
From there, you would start spraying the stone or other texture onto the tile, working in a small area and taking smooth, consistent strokes. Using spray on stone to change the appearance of tile instead of installing brand new tile offers a number of benefits. For one thing, it is a more cost-efficient solution with the number of cans needed depending on the area wanting to change. Additionally, this type of product is extremely easy to use, it comes in so many wonderful colors, and design options are limited only by your creativity.
If you were interested in changing tile in a country style kitchen decorated with roosters, you could create a checkerboard look by alternating beige with blue. However, a modern kitchen would look stunning with solid black or gray, or a mixture of the two in a design of your choosing. Another design option for spray on stone would be to choose a primary color, and then spray the border a different color. The bottom line is that the number of possibilities for transforming the look of tile in the bathroom and kitchen with a product such as this is endless.
