Home Improvement Projects for the Kitchen
Updating the kitchen is something you can never go wrong in doing. With the kitchen being the most important room of the home, when home improvement projects are completed correctly, you automatically increase the overall value of the home. We have pulled together seven great project ideas that would make a difference in the way your kitchen looks but also the way it functions.
1. Hardware – To give old cabinets a completely new and fresh look, consider switching out hardware. This includes not just the handles, but also the hinges. If your home was built during a specific era, then choose hardware that associates with that era. Even if you have new cabinets installed, this would be a great opportunity to have unique hardware added on instead of what may have come with the cabinet order.
2. If your kitchen cabinets are open on the top, consider installing railing, which would allow you to display beautiful glass plates, mirrors, or silver trays. If you prefer to leave the space open, then adding some type of decorative string lighting would be a perfect way to enhance the area. With this, the lights would add character but also product a soft illumination that creates a different ambience.
3. Another way to update and improve the appearance of older cabinets is to paint them and once dried and the doors reattached, add decorative trim to the bottom portion. This type of improvement would be excellent for a Victorian or Shabby Chic style room.
4. If you have a kitchen island but the surface has become old and worn, instead of paying a fortune to have a new top installed, you have a number of projects you could do on your own. For instance, you could use new natural stone tile or for something unique and even colorful, use mosaic tile to cover the surface. As long as the mosaic pieces are flat, grouted, and sealed, it would look amazing and provide a perfect prep surface.
5. If your kitchen cabinets have no open space, you could build a small shelf connecting between the two cabinets over the sink area. Then, if no light fixture exists, a canned or recessed light would provide illumination down onto the shelf, providing a new element to the kitchen, as well as another place to display favorite items.
6. Something that is often overlooked when going through home improvement projects for the kitchen is the baseboard or trim. For instance, if the wood in your kitchen is dark, it can cause the entire room to look outdated and drab. However, by priming the baseboard and trim around the window, followed by paining it with white trim paint, the whole room appears larger, more open, and definitely more modern.
7. Changing out lighting can also change the look and feel of the kitchen. While fluorescent lighting is more cost efficient, it also produces an unnatural almost sterile glow that takes away from the warmth you want to create in this particular room. Therefore, choosing a low-voltage light fixture in a style that would complement the room's style or décor would be a much better solution.
Within the kitchen, numerous fixtures, appliances, and other components play an important role in the room's overall appeal. However, one item that is out of sight but never out of mind is the garbage disposal.
When pipes crack, leaks would form but if the pipe actually bursts, water would flood the bathroom, potentially causing serious damage. Today, under sink pipes are sometimes made from copper but the most popular material is PVC,
Some homes have a shut-off valve for water under the sink whereas others homes do not. Homes built today are automatically designed with a valve of this type but homes constructed during the 1970s and earlier usually do not. Having a shut-off valve for each sink in the house provides a number of benefits.
In some homes, the number of electrical outlets in the kitchen is just not enough. If you enjoy cooking and entertaining but have limited access to outlets, you probably find time in the kitchen more frustrating than fun.
With homes 20 years of age and older, it is common to start noticing squeaky areas of the floor. Regardless of the flooring type hardwood, carpet, tile, stone, etc, the squeak comes from loose floor joists. ,
Due to the current housing market, we see fewer people moving, choosing instead to make improvements on an existing home. If this is you or you simply want to update and outdated home, the information provided will help.
