Home Solar Power Systems

How to Live on a Home Solar Power System

Solar power as a renewable energy source has been used commercially for a long time. Eventually, this type of power became available to homeowners and while at first people who went to solar power were considered a little odd, the value of a solar powered home has been realized. Because of this, better systems have been developed and the number of people now using solar power within the home has risen dramatically.

Although solar power is a long known source of power, with new technology and the rising cost of electricity, the number of people making the choice to use solar power is truly staggering. In addition, in the past decade a tremendous amount of attention has gone into "green" living as a means of saving the planet from issues such as the diminishing ozone. Today, we can say with confidence that solar power, as an alternative and renewable solution is extremely beneficial and an excellent way of saving money.

Best of all, adding solar power to your home or even converting all your energy to solar power has never been easier. Therefore, if you want to make more environmentally-friendly decisions, add value to your home, and save money every month on the electric bill, using a solar powered system is an excellent solution. As you begin your search for the best type of system, you will be amazed at all the possibilities.

For instance, one system that has proven to be ideal for residential use is called the PV System. With this, grids are linked to the local electric company but then panels attached to the roof or side of the home would be used to capture and store electrical power. The benefit is that your entire home could run off the power from the grids with any surplus being used by the electrical company. Therefore, you benefit by paying far less for electricity than without the grid system but also, the utility company benefits by being able to use the extra stored power.

Another benefit of using the PV System for residential solar power is that unlike other types of systems, no batteries are needed. In addition, because you would be linked to the grids, all electrical power in your home would be covered on a daily basis but then on cloudy days when no or very little solar power was being stored, you would have power coming from the electric company. The one consideration with the PV System is that depending on where you live and your utility company, you may or may not need to get prior approval before installing the grid system.

Another option for residential solar power if you prefer to operate your home on solar power without depending on the utility company is with a system that uses batteries for backup. With this, solar panels or modules would be fitted to the roof. Keep in mind that with so many different types of panels and installation options, this would work with virtually any architectural style home. In this case, the batteries would store solar power so again, the home would run off solar power coming from the panels on a daily basis, but on cloudy days, the stored power in the batteries would be used for continued operation. The greatest benefit in this case is that your monthly utility bill would be $0.

Remember, along with the larger, more expensive commercial systems available, you can find a number of smaller systems. These solar power systems make great do-it-yourself projects and while the amount of power stored may not be to the same level, you would still have the ability to run the main items in the home free. For instance, the air conditioner, heater, washer and dryer, dishwasher, television, internet, etc would all be supported by a smaller home solar power system.

When choosing, several key factors would need to be considered. For instance, the amount of electricity used annually, the amount of money you want to save, finances you are able to invest, and your geographical area are just a few. As long as the solar power system or kit is purchased from a reputable company, you would be able to support a healthier planet, operate some or the entire home on free power, and in some cases, sell surplus power back to the utility company whereby they would actually pay you.
